New Items Added to Provincial Programs

We are excited to announce the addition of items to our recycling programs across Nova Scotia, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and responsible waste management. These initiatives, supported by Product Care Recycling and Call2Recycle, offer convenient solutions for recycling hazardous materials, lamps (light bulbs and lighting items), and batteries, helping to keep our communities clean and green.

Light Recycling Nova Scotia

Effective August 1, 2024, Product Care Recycling, currently responsible for the paint recycling program in Nova Scotia, will be adding lamps (lights) and other products as designated materials under an extended producer responsibility framework.

The program will accept designated lamps from all sectors: residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial, regardless of the brand.   There will be no charge for accepting designated lamps at any of the program’s return collection facilities, although quantity limits may apply.

Accepted Products:

  • Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)

  • Fluorescent tubes (straight, curved, U, circular, square, etc.)

  • High-intensity discharge (HIDs) and special purpose bulbs

  • Incandescent and halogen bulbs

  • Miniature bulbs

  • Light emitting diodes (LEDs)

  • Ultra High Performance (UHP) (replacement projector lamps)

  • UV and germicidal bulbs

New Producer Responsibility Regulations in Nova Scotia

Under new provincial regulations that took effect on July 1, 2024, obligated producers (which include battery manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers) are now responsible for ensuring that the batteries they produce or sell are responsibly managed at their end-of-life.

How It Works:

  • Collection Boxes: Drop off used batteries at Call2Recycle collection boxes located in various public and retail locations.

  • Accepted Batteries: The program accepts rechargeable and single-use batteries of all shapes and sizes.

  • Environmental Impact: Recycling batteries prevents hazardous materials from contaminating soil and water, while recovering valuable metals for reuse.

At Waste Check, we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability. We encourage all Nova Scotians to participate in recycling programs and make a positive impact on our environment.
